The Jamat-e-Islami Hind, a well-known organisation that runs more than 500 educational institutions across the country, has filed a defamation suit against the Mumbai police for allegedly linking one of its branches with terror-related activities.

The Muslim body has demanded Rs 10 crore as compensation from the city police for issuing a departmental communication stating that members of its women's wing, Girls Islamic Organisation (GIO), "were indoctrinating college girls and imparting training in jihad".

The internal circular had been leaked to the media in March.

Taufique Aslam Khan, president of JIH's Maharashtra wing, said they waited for nearly five months before taking any step as the cops had assured them that an inquiry would be launched and strict action would be taken against the person behind the leak.

"Despite assurance, we did not receive any reply from the Mumbai police. We sent them a legal notice in July. When that too did not result in any response, we decided to move the Bombay High Court," said Khan.

GIO members say theirs is one of India's largest Islamic organisations and runs 40 high schools and three junior colleges in Maharashtra. They allege the Mumbai police memo has severely dented their reputation. "Girls have stopped participating in our programmes," said Mohammad Aslam Ghazi, spokesperson of JIH's state wing.

The circular, issued by the Special Branch of Mumbai police in the third week of March, read: "The group GIO is an offshoot of the 65-year-old Jamat-e-Islami Organisation and is currently active in Kerala. The purported aim of this organisation is to make more and more Muslim women aware of their religion and the holy Quran. But the real objective of this organisation is to brainwash college and school girls and train them for jihad."

Ghazi said a delegation from GIO had met the cops in April. While they accepted that there was nothing incriminatory against Jamat's women's wing, they said they had acted based on some intelligence inputs, he said.

"Therefore, it is necessary for Mumbai police to compensate for the damages done to our peaceful organisation. The cops should have tried to keep a track on the activities of the organisation before attaching a terror tag to it," added Ghazi.

Mumbai police spokesman Satyanarayan Choudhary said, "The circular was meant to be only for the department and not for the public. As regards any inquiry into the incident, I do not have any information on it at the moment."

JIH official said they are also seeking legal opinions to take action against newspapers that had reproduced the circular.

Jamaat-e-Islami Hind sues state for Rs 10 cr

Mumbai, Wed Sep 25 2013, 01:48 hrs
The Jamaat-e-Islami Hind has slapped a Rs 10-crore defamation suit in the Bombay High Court against the state government, the state police and even the Union government.
The suit comes in the backdrop of a circular issued by the state police in April, asking its officers to keep a special watch on JIH's sister organisation, the Girls Islamic Organisation (GIO) since it was allegedly radicalising Muslim youths.
"We have filed a Rs 10-crore defamation suit against the state. The organisation has been working since 1941. Our work is not such that it would create a rift in society. That circular has done immense damage to our reputation. People are unwilling to allow their daughters to join GIO now," JIH spokesperson Aslam Ghazi said.
The suit names nine entities, including the Union of India and the Maharashtra government. It has also made the state DGP, Mumbai police commissioner, additional commissioner of police Naval Bajaj and DCP Sanjay Shintre a party.
Asked why it took so long to file a suit, Ghazi said it was following procedure. "We had sent the state police a notice seeking their explanation, but they ignored it, hence a defamation suit," Ghazi said.
After the organisation protested, the police had said it found nothing adverse against it and that the circular was meant for internal circulation. Police claimed it was probing how the circular was leaked, but stopped short of apologising to the organisation.
The Jammat-e-Islami was formed by noted but controversial theologian Abul Ala Maududi who was born in Aurangabad but played a defining role in the history of Pakistan. An organisation with a strong cadre base, its state unit presently operates from a dingy 700-sq ft three-room office in Madanpura. The Girls Islamic Organisation, under the police scanner, operates from this office. The GIO has over 450 full-time members, all below the age of 25. It has a 2,500-strong cadre who are called associate members.

Mumbai: The Jamat-e-Islami Hind on Tuesday filed a Rs 10 crore defamation suit against the city police for issuing a circular in March this year about its sister wing, Girls Islamic Organization (GIO).
The special branch (SB) police had issued a fortnightly report to city cops which stated that GIO was trying to “motivate girls towards Islam and asking them to practise the religion”. The report had indicated that the GIO was preparing Muslim girls for jihad.
TOI, in its March 31 edition, had carried a story titled, ‘Women’s group under the scanner of Mumbai police’. This sparked off protests and people associated with GIO met SB additional police commissioner, Nawal Bajaj, who assured them of a probe. “We waited for the probe report and even sent a letter asking about it but got no reply. We had no option but to file a defamation suit against the Mumbai Police,” said Taufique Aslam Khan, president of Jamat. Bajaj could not be contacted.

Depreciation of Rupee is a Symptom of bigger disease, solution lies in the fundamental approach suggested by Islam: Jamaat-e-Islami Hind

Depreciation of Rupee is a Symptom of bigger disease, solution lies in the fundamental approach suggested by Islam: Jamaat-e-Islami Hind
American attack on Syria may stir regional war and may be disastrous for middle east, while America wants to attack to protect Israeli interests: Jamaat
New Delhi, 07th Sept. 2013:  “The phenomenon of the current depreciation of Rupee in the international market is a symptom of other bigger disease. The sharp fall in the exchange rate of rupee vis-à-vis US dollar shows that Indian economy is in turmoil and it is so perceived internationally too. This brings to light the hollowness of our claim that we are destined to become one of the largest and sturdiest economies in near future,” said, Ameer (all India President) of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Maulana Syed Jalaluddin Umari while addressing the press conference today at Jamaat’s headquarters in the capital.

“The depreciation of rupee is, in fact, a symptom of bigger malaise in economy. The symptom itself needs to be addressed immediately but that would be a short term solution and the ills of economy will continue to recur in one form or another. A long term solution is to diagnose correctly the disease and opt for its complete cure, whatever time consuming or painful be that therapy. The basic cause of any depreciation of money is Current Account Deficit (CAD) where growth of import is faster than that of import. The simple solution is to curb imports and increase exports. And for increasing export the creation of quality products and services and their facilitations are required. Such increase in Import over the years at a good pace can be related to the economic reforms brought in the year 1991 when today's prime Minister was the Finance Minister. Import was facilitated and it grew leaps and bonds. Productivity and export were ignored and their consequences followed. The dichotomy was felt later. A correction was done by announcing Manufacturing Policy, 2010, which is, for all practical purposes, a non-starter. The major share of import billing comprises crude oil, followed by items like gold, iron ore and coal. We are facing problem in paying our oil bills in US dollar. Import of gold, a non-essential item can be totally avoided. Import of coal and iron ore which we have in abundance as reserve is a matter of national shame. Our failure to arrange refineries or processing arrangements for improving these raw materials to the stage where these can be utilised as inputs is the major cause of these imports. Further, courts have curbed their export, obviously owing to alleged cases of corruptions,” Maulana Umari said.
Giving remedies for the pathetic situation of the current economy, the President of Jamaat said, “Structural corrections of economics are required. The solution lies in the fundamental approach suggested by Islam and the world should consider the alternative system of economy which Islam presents. Capital must be brought in on the basis of equity and not as a debt. The debt should always be at par. Islamic approach is asset based equity finance as against the debt-based finance with assured premium on the debt. Finally Islam leaves no scope for the hegemony, like that on US dollar which gets undue benefits of international financial transactions.”

‘Govt must pass Communal Violence Bill in Parliament for safety of minorities
“As the parliamentary elections of 2014, and assembly elections of some states are drawing near, it appears that organized efforts are being made, particularly in some states, to promote communal tensions and provoke communal conflicts. During last one year about 50 communal conflicts have taken place in Uttar Pradesh alone. In this way the fire of communalism is being stoked while the government is not taking action against the perpetrators. The situation in fraught with grave danger and would weaken the country,” the President of Jamaat said.
Demanding to impede communalism from the society, Maulana Umari said, “this is imperative that the central and states governments must deal with an iron hand every incident of communal violence to maintain the peaceful atmosphere in the country. In this regard we repeat our oft-repeated demand that the central government must present the Communal Violence Bill and get it passed in the Parliament, so that the minorities are freed from the sense of fear and insecurity and are able to equally participate in the progress of the country. Providing security to minorities and putting an end to communal riots would be the proof of the strength of democracy.”
Commenting on killing of Muslim youths in fake encounters, the President of Jamaat said, “it is worth remembering that first, the communal elements targeted the Muslim youths in fake encounters calling them terrorists. After investigation, the fact  has become evident that there was a nexus between police and communal elements behind the fake encounters. The truth behind murder of Sohrabuddin, Kausar Bi, Ishrat Jahan, Sadiq Jamal etc in fake encounters is out and the world knows how these murders were planned and executed by high ranking police officers. The world also knows how youths like Khalid Mujahid were implicated in false cases and killed in custody. The fresh revelations by suspended IPS officer D.G. Vanzara has laid bare conspiracies behind curtain. It is unfortunate that such efforts which tarnish the image of Muslims are continuing.”

Jamaat welcomes Food Security Act with rider
“We welcomes Food Security Act.  It establishes a sense of entitlement on behalf of the government to recognize the right to food of its citizens. This is a very progressive step. The UPA government, under the pressure from civil society has finally granted the rights of its people in different areas- RTI (Right to Information), RTE (Right to Free and Compulsory Education), MNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) etc,” said the President of Jamaat”
“This is a welcome sign that after 65 years of independence the government has finally recognized the rights of its people. However the Act  lacks some basic thins as it covers only 67% of the country’s population: 75% in the rural areas and 55% of the urban area (national average). It’s still less. This will create problems in identifying the priority households. Therefore the Government must accept the demands of Universal PDS. And improve and make more effective the PDS,” said Maulana Umari.

American attack on Syria may stir regional war and may be disastrous for middle east, while America wants to attack to protect Israeli interests: Jamaat
“In Syria the authoritarian regime of Bashar Al Assad is engaged in the massacre of its own people for the last two and half years. More than 100,000 people have lost their lives and over 20-lakh have been rendered homeless and forced to live as refugees.  After the recent use of chemical weapons in which more than 1300 people mostly children have died, the American government is poised to attack Syria. Bloodshed, use of chemical weapons or use of any type of weapons for committing atrocities against people all these are condemnable acts. The American attack may enhance the deterioration of situation . Therefore the Jamaat is of the view that America should not intervene. There is a strong apprehension that America wants to attack Syria to help its ally Israel and to protect Israeli interests.  The American attack may complicate the situation and involvement of Russia and other countries may give way to a regional war which may be disastrous for Middle East and lead to economic destabilisation  in the world on a large scale.  America should examine its track record that because of its intervention Iraq and Afghanistan have become victims of permanent instability and witnessing daily bomb-blasts and killings. So American role has been not only tainted but also shameful,” Maulana Umari said.
Appealing to Muslim countries, Maulana Umari said “they have a big responsibility. They must protects Islamic democratic values in their lands and unite to oppose every act of injustice and tyranny.”
Some Muslim rulers’ support for unjust actions of Egypt’s military and calling peaceful demonstrators terrorists is highly shameful act: Jamaat
Expressing grave concern over the dismissal of popular and democratic government  of Egypt and the unjust actions of the military government, Maulana Umari said, “an emergency has been imposed on Egypt  and arrests of office bearers and members of Muslim Brotherhood and torture and atrocities are continuing. The government is even thinking about imposing a ban on the Brotherhood. The military government is responsible for the unjustified death of thousands of men, women and children. It is highly shameful that some Muslim rulers and their governments are supporting these atrocities and calling the peaceful demonstrators rebels and terrorists. It is evident that they are doing this either on the behest of America or just to protect their power and authority. It is the responsibility of all thinking Muslims and well-wishers of Ummah and their governments to stop the bloodshed and torture of the innocents and put an end to all undemocratic methods and strive for restoration of democratic rule in Egypt.”

BSF officer, cop posed as IM men to extort: Police

http://www.indianexpress.com/news/bsf-officer-cop-posed-as-im-men-to-extort-police/1162011/
A Delhi Police constable, a retired Border Security Force (BSF) officer and a serving BSF officer were arrested on charges of attempting to extort Rs 30 lakh from a Noida-based doctor. The three allegedly pretended to be members of terrorist outfit Indian Mujahideen (IM) to extort from the doctor, who is from Kashmir.
Police said the accused have been identified as Pavan Kumar (45), a retired BSF officer who had previously served in Delhi and Kashmir, Paramjeet Bhati (30), a BSF officer, Vikas Choudhury (28), a Delhi Police constable posted in Police Lines.
On August 16, Dr Vinay Bhatt received a letter from "IM members", demanding Rs 30 lakh, police said.
Bhatt told police that he received many extortion calls from different numbers till August 31.
Police put Bhatt's phone on surveillance and arrested the accused. "On August 28, we arrested the three. Pavan Kumar was the mastermind. He visited the doctor for treatment a few months ago and was impressed by the amount of money the doctor earned," a senior police officer said.
Police said the accused used a software called 'Crazy Call', which helped scramble phone calls made to Dr Bhatt. "Paramjeet made the threatening calls," the officer said.
